A total of 87 patients with type 2 diabetes treated with SU for a mean duration of 4.4 +/- 3.9 years (range, 0.5 to 14 years) were enrolled in a cross-sectional study, and their left and right common carotid and common femoral artery intima-media thickness was determined using high-resolution B-mode ultrasonography. For each subject, arterial stiffness was expressed as a measure of the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV), as an augmentation index (AIx) and as a central pulse pressure (cPP). The mean age was 65 +/- 11 years and the mean duration of SU use was 4.4 +/- 3.9 years.
